My practice is in its third year. The good news is I have two clients. One of them has been with me since September. The bad news is that I haven’t not exceeded that number .My community is saturated with helpers whose pre-private days were filled with jobs with others with whom they made connections. I am guessing at the average age of the helpers in my area is 45. I feel like I can’t compete with their years of life experience.
I’ve taken your marketing personality quiz. I am introverted techno person. I am thinking that maybe I should be talking to my webhosting people; because I am freshening my content quarterly to no avail. If people are using their devices to prequalify or interview providers, they aren’t calling me. I don’t know what to do differently in 2015.
I invited a client to review my website after we spoke for fifteen minutes on the phone. I still sensed ambivalence and I wanted to eliminate any confusion on what could be expected from myself and the client. The person did not call or email me back.
I figure I have to prevent the buyerbeware syndrome by providing all the information possible ahead of time. Perhaps I was pushing too hard.

A few years ago I was interested in starting a private practice and ordered some of your materials. In the intervening years, life took a few unexpected turns and my goal of starting a practice was put on the back burner. Now that I am revisiting the idea and have again started using some of your online resources I feel somewhat confused. For example, in the past your spoke at length about the benefits of tag lines and highlighting clinical specialities and now you seem to moving in the opposite direction. I recently ordered some of your older materials and now that I am watching some of your more recent youtube videos the messages are not only different but contradictory, meandering and difficult to follow. “Letting the joy out? Being in alignment? “Let it come from the heart? Huh????? Forgive me I am confused! Some kind of explanation that accounts for the shift would be helpful.

    • Casey Truffo and the BAWT Team says:

      Hi Roma,

Great question. I stopped talking about tag lines a few years ago. Our culture has changed and tag lines don’t attract clients these days too much hype … passion for your work does and letting that show and building relationships does work. I got very tired of therapists avoiding actually marketing their practices because they sat around creating tag lines that don’t work now anyway. Regarding specialties – I go back and forth on that. I do believe it can be helpful and I think ‘relationship struggles’ can be a simple, catch-all for those who don’t want to niche too narrowly. What has never changed is marketing using the client’s words – what do THEY wake up at 3am worrying about and are willing to pay for help with. No one wants to buy counseling – they want to buy a solution to a problem.

      Hope that helps!

  4. I have wings but I need a map. We all need support and direction, especially from someone who is trained to help.

  5. Even my husband’s support isn’t enough….I can’t do this without a mentor….I choose to do this with a mentor.
