In my work as a business mentor to therapists, I’ve realized that there are two stages of personal growth all therapy business owners must pass through.
The first stage is the new stage- where everything is exciting about private practice. “Oh! I got a new office! Oh! I got business cards! Oh! I bought a new couch for my office!” – and so on. This new and shiny phase is really fun, and most therapists enjoy this part- it’s the first step towards greater independence and financial freedom.
The second stage is the challenge stage- this is where things can get a little bit tough. You are marketing, but no one is calling. You keep meeting new possible referral sources, but nobody is referring. This stage requires persistence and resilience.
There are two possible responses to this stage. The first is a sense of energy, action, and trying to rise to the challenge. The second- and this is where I want to focus most on- is what happens when you start to feel defeated or overwhelmed- and you get caught in all the reasons why not.
I get at least 25 emails each day from therapists who are stuck in all the reasons why not. “But Casey, I can’t possibly speak to others about my practice.” “But Casey, I tried that and it didn’t work.” “But Casey…but Casey…but Casey.”
The truth is, we’ve all tried things that don’t work. The only difference is that for some of us, it’s easier to get back out there and try again- because we don’t want to settle for all the reasons why we can’t have the therapy business we want.
For others, though, they let their excuses get in the way of doing what needs to be done.
You’ve heard the joke about “how many therapists does it take to change a lightbulb?” – Answer: “Just one, but the lightbulb has to want to change.”
It’s the same thing with therapy business building. If you truly feel you’re trying things and they aren’t working out, that is not a sign to resign yourself to whatever practice you have now. That is, in fact, an invitation to find another way- to want to change.
If you want to work with a team that is 100% committed to your therapy business and helping you overcome your personal limitations about what’s possible for you to achieve, then I would welcome your application to our year long Ruby mentorship program.
The Ruby program will give you the structure, accountability, tools, and confidence to stop accepting things the way they are- and create them exactly as you want them to be.
